According to the “Northern Japan News†report, Faperiavir is an influenza drug, but it has a different mechanism of action than many anti-influenza drugs. Drugs such as Tamiflu prevent infections by preventing the proliferation of the virus from getting out of the cell. Falapride, however, blocks the proliferation of the virus by blocking gene replication in the cell.
Researchers at Toyama Chemical Industries Co., Ltd. said that since influenza viruses and Ebola viruses are all RNA viruses, Fabiravir may block the proliferation of Ebola virus in cells and thus stop the infection.
Fabiravir is approved as a new type of anti-influenza drug manufactured and sold in Japan in March this year under the trade name Avigan. In the United States, Toyama Chemical Industry Corporation applied for clinical trials of the drug in 2007 to confirm its efficacy as an anti-influenza drug. At present, this clinical trial has entered the final stage.
The “Northern Japan News†report said that due to the rapid spread of the Ebola outbreak, the U.S. health department is preparing to speed up the approval of the use of Piravir for anti-Ebola virus clinical trials.
Currently, there are other individual drugs in the world that are expected to be used for the treatment of Ebola haemorrhagic fever. Since Farabivir has been approved for marketing in Japan, the time for mass production may be the earliest of these "hope drugs."
