Covering the use of drones to transport medical supplies throughout Rwanda

Rwanda is a country in the central and eastern part of Africa. It is located on the south side of the equator in central and eastern Africa. It is mountainous and is known as the “country of thousands of hills”. Like many African countries, the country is also shrouded in poverty. According to statistics, Rwanda's per capita GDP in 2015 was only 697 US dollars, so it is underdeveloped in education, science and technology, medical care, etc., especially in medical care. At present, Rwanda's medical facilities and conditions are very low.

In addition to its poor economic base, there are still a steady stream of dirt roads that restrict Rwanda's medical standards. There is no railway in Rwanda. Because it is a landlocked country, there is no water transport. The transportation system is mainly road network. More than 70% of the roads in China are difficult to walk, making the economic cost and time cost of transportation very high. Because of the imperfect medical facilities and transportation infrastructure, many Rwandan residents are not able to get timely medical treatment and drug supply when they are sick. This has always annoyed the government.

Until May last year, Silicon Valley startup Zipline announced that it would enter Rwanda in cooperation with Global Express Freight UPS and Gavi, the global vaccine immunization alliance, to use drones to deliver medicines to local medical stations.

Zipline was founded five years ago. In April of this year, Zipline announced that it has received a total of $18 million in financing, including Sequoia Capital, Google Ventures, Yahoo co-founder Yang Zhiyuan, Subtraction Capital, and Stanford University.

Including Amazon, many of the commercial logistics drones currently use multi-rotor drones for fixed-point delivery. For the special use of drugs in less developed countries such as Rwanda, multi-axis is obviously not suitable because Rwanda Mountainous, environmental, weather and other external factors are complex. Multi-rotor UAVs are greatly affected by voyage and environmental factors, so Zipline uses fixed wings as carriers for transportation.

In order to be able to deliver medicines, blood and other medical supplies to their destinations quickly and accurately, Zipline has developed a service system. When the medical staff of the medical station has a certain demand for medicine, the drone administrator can send a corresponding text message. After receiving the short message, the drone management personnel will find the required medicine in the drug warehouse and pack it into the medicine. In the nacelle's nacelle, the drone's operating system has an automatic fixed-point flight. The operator only needs to select the location to be transported in the control interface, and the drone will fly to the corresponding place.
