Developed a medical image analysis and diagnosis system based on artificial intelligence, and Tumar Shenwei won a $1.5 million angel round financing

Release date: 2016-10-19

It is a common practice for doctors to make disease diagnosis with medical images. It is understood that 70% of clinical diagnosis relies on medical imaging. Coupled with the increase in the total population, the aging trend and the increase in income levels, it is driving the long-term growth of the medical imaging industry. Some analysts believe that by 2020, China's medical imaging equipment market will initially reach a market size of 40 billion. However, there are still many problems to be solved in this blue ocean, such as how to reduce the rate of misdiagnosis of diseases and improve the diagnostic efficiency of doctors. Artificial intelligence may provide a good answer to this question.

Established in 2015, Tuma Deep (12Sigma) is such a system developer that introduces deep learning artificial intelligence technology into intelligent medical diagnosis. 12Sigma founder Zhong Wei revealed that recently, 12Sigma has completed the $1.5 million angel round financing, which is jointly invested by Zhenge Fund and Jingwei China.

Zhong Wei said that Tuma Deep Dimensions introduces deep learning into computer-aided diagnosis systems, which can be applied to various medical image analysis and diagnosis, pathological image analysis under microscope, and discovery of sequence specificity of DNA-binding proteins and assist in genomic diagnosis. Wait. Help radiologists improve diagnostic accuracy and diagnostic efficiency, reduce diagnostic costs, and provide patients with better diagnostic and treatment options.

At present, some companies at home and abroad have tried on artificial medical medical imaging diagnosis, such as Enlitic in Silicon Valley in the United States, Imagia in Canada, and DeepCare and Pushing Technology reported in the previous 36 countries.

In contrast, 12Sigma chose different entry points for disease solutions. The company's first product is an automated diagnostic system for lung cancer (SigmaLUTM). The data used in the system training is derived from tens of thousands of chest CT scan data provided by several top three hospitals in China and the American Cancer Society. It can automatically segment the lungs from the chest CT scan and automatically mark the location of the suspected lung cancer nodules. Information such as size and shape, and the analysis of lung medical images by radiologists in auxiliary hospitals or medical imaging diagnostic centers can greatly reduce the workload of clinicians while helping doctors improve the detection rate of early lung cancer.

Low-dose CT has now become the recommended method for NCCN screening for lung cancer and pulmonary nodules. However, the clinical detection rate of lung nodules is generally between 15% and 20%, and the missed detection rate of the best radiologists in the United States is around 7%. The pre-experimental data proves that the reliability of the 12 Sigma automated diagnosis system for lung cancer is 98.5%, which means that the missed detection rate is only 1.5%; and the accuracy of the system is 4.0, which means the detected pulmonary nodules. The ratio of false positive to true positive is 4:1.

“Therefore, our CAD system is exactly what doctors need. Because doctors rarely misjudge, but it is easy to miss. SigmaLUTM system makes up for the doctor's artificial diagnosis of high defect rate, the system for misjudgment, doctor Screening and correction can be done quickly to assist doctors in diagnosing and improving work efficiency," Zhong said.

At present, Tuma's customers are mainly based on the B-end, and their business models can be roughly divided into two categories:

First, it is promoted to hospitals, imaging centers, and physical examination centers. At present, the company mainly enters the hospital in the form of scientific research cooperation, and through the system to assist doctors to diagnose, obtain relevant data and doctors' guidance feedback.

The second is to cooperate with PACS vendors and medical device manufacturers to integrate the system as software in other products. It is understood that 12Sigma has been connected to the PACS system provider and entered the hospital along with their integrated system.

The company is headquartered in Beijing and has a branch office in San Diego, USA. In terms of team size, Tuma Deep has 7 research teams in the US and 4 R&D sales teams in China. Founder and CEO Zhong Wei is a Bachelor of Biomedical Engineering from Tsinghua University, a Master of Biomedical Engineering and Electronic Engineering from the University of Michigan, and a Master of Business Administration from Carnegie Mellon University. He has worked for Qualcomm, Goldman Sachs Securities Trading, Merrill Lynch. Financial Management Department. Co-founder and CTO Gao Dashan graduated from the Department of Automation at Tsinghua University with a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of California-San Diego. He has worked for GE Global Research and Qualcomm, and is an expert in artificial intelligence and computer vision.

Previously, 12Sigma had received $300,000 in seed round financing. Zhong Rong said that after the current round of financing, the company's product development will expand from the point of view in the field of lung disease, from the automatic diagnosis of lung nodules to the automatic diagnosis of many types of respiratory diseases such as tuberculosis and emphysema. . In the next three to five years, 12Sigma plans to introduce 6-8 categories of automated diagnostic products for tumors, cardiovascular diseases, and cerebrovascular diseases.

Viruses and bacteria are everywhere. Preventing them in advance is the best way to reduce the risk of infection. Wearing a mask and washing hands frequently are crucial. The new type of coronavirus has the characteristics of contact transmission, and the fact that the virus exists on the doorknob of patients with pneumonia has also shown the necessity of paying attention to hand hygiene and wearing disposable protective gloves.

Whether it is going out to purchase daily necessities or buying through online platforms, it is inevitable to come into contact with "foreign" items, such as supermarket shopping carts, packaging bags, express packaging boxes, etc., and more things need to be touched after resuming work, such as It is inevitable to take public transportation, elevators, etc., these places may have been touched by patients or suspected patients. Wearing disposable protective gloves is an effective means to reduce the risk of infection when there is no condition to wash your hands at any time.
