Corn sorghum seedlings feed livestock susceptible to poisoning

In the countryside, every summer, many people use corn seedlings, sorghum seedlings, pumpkin vines, etc. to feed pigs, cattle and other livestock, but often eat too many tender seedlings, resulting in pigs, cattle gastrointestinal dysfunction, and some even died.

Why do pigs and cattle eat poisoned corn when they eat fresh corn seedlings? These seedling stems and leaves contain a toxin known as cyanide glycosides, which are converted into the highly toxic substance, hydrocyanic acid, by the action of enzymes and stomach acids when the animals eat these seedlings. Hydrocyanic acid can interfere with the oxidative process of enzymes on cell respiration, causing the respiratory center cells of livestock to stop the exchange function due to lack of oxygen, and then undergo tissue hypoxia. After the occurrence of poisoning, the livestock became restless, opened their mouths and raised their necks, had a dilated pupil, salivation, abdominal pain, vomiting, difficulty in breathing, quadriplegia, and convulsions. Preventive measures are:

Avoid direct feeding of fresh seedlings

Maize, sorghum, etc. in their different growth stages, the amount of toxins vary greatly. Young seedlings, especially those harvested after harvest, contain the most toxic and most dangerous foods; when they reach the late growth stage, the amount of toxins is extremely low. Therefore, seedlings should not be directly fed to pigs and should be fed with other feeds after drying or silage.

After soaking in cold water

Seedlings, seedlings of corn, sorghum seedlings, soaked in clean water for a few days, then washed to reduce toxins, can significantly remove the toxicity of livestock. After dipping, the tender seedlings should not exceed one-third of the mixed food.

Boiling detoxification

Cyanic acid glycosides are most likely to decompose hydrocyanic acid at 40°C-60°C. Hydrocyanic acid is also volatile in solution. Therefore, when cooking for pigs, as long as the micro-boiling is ensured, the lid is opened continuously. Mixing and letting cool, most of the poisons have been removed, and generally no harm.

Potassium permanganate gastric lavage
