Micro-esophage scanners can be found in advance to detect cancerous lesions

Release date: 2013-01-18

It is hoped that this technology developed in the United States will be an easier way to scan the symptoms of Barrett's oesophagus, so that early detection of the disease that can cause cancer. Unlike current imaging technologies, this device can be used while the patient is conscious and only takes a few minutes. So far this device has only been tested in a small number of patients. When people suffer from Barrett's oesophagus, cells in the lower esophagus become abnormal due to long-term acid reflux, which puts them at high risk of developing esophageal cancer. The doctor can use the endoscope to scan for those symptoms, but it must be done in a calm state. The new device is contained in a capsule of the size of a vitamin tablet with a thin wire attached to the outside. Inside the capsule is a fast-rotating laser probe that emits infrared light that is reflected back inside the esophagus. The doctor can see the 3D image of the esophagus on the screen, and the microscopic details far exceed the endoscope effect. When the patient swallows the capsule, it enters the stomach in the same way as a tablet and can then be pulled back into the esophagus using a thin wire. The device was tested on six patients known to have symptoms of Barrett's oesophagus and seven healthy volunteers, and the researchers said the images clearly showed changes in the cells in those patients.
Professor Gehry Tirner, one of the collaborators of the study, said the technique is cheaper than endoscopy and avoids the need for sedatives, specialized equipment and professional training, and the microscopic details of the picture can avoid biopsies. . Professor Tilner said: "The esophagus picture produced by this device is some of the best pictures we have seen. We initially worried that we would lose a lot of data, but we were pleasantly surprised to find that it brought us a complete esophageal wall. Microscopic images.” Professor Tilner added that the device can help doctors determine who is at risk and may find cancer at an early stage that is easier to handle.
