Smart Necklace monitors the wearer's dietary calorie intake by analyzing chewing sounds

Release date: 2016-04-08

You can use the diet log to record calorie expenditure, but it is difficult to record the intake of each meal. Now researchers have developed a way to liberate your hands, automatically tracking your calorie intake through the sounds you chew and swallow.

The AutoDiertary is a smart necklace that lets you hear the sound of biting, grinding and swallowing with your own throat microphone and send the data to the app to match the right food.

The equipment was developed by a team of computer professors from Buffalo University, Xu Wenzhao, and researchers from Northeastern University. Buffalo University researchers have created a database of people's sounds of biting, chewing and swallowing food. The team said that AutoDietary is similar to other wearable devices such as Fitbit, except that the device records the amount of heat people consume rather than the amount of calories burned.

Xu said that there is no shortage of equipment for recording calorie consumption on the market, but it is difficult to make a reliable device for recording caloric intake.

The device is designed in the form of a necklace that monitors the size of the microphone to be similar to the zipper head.

The R&D team conducted a 12-person trial between the ages of 13 and 49, both male and female. Participants need to drink water and eat six kinds of food: apples, carrots, chips, biscuits, peanuts and walnuts. The results show that AutoDietary recognizes foods with an accuracy of 85%.

But the researchers also said that the device can't distinguish between similar foods or complex foods such as soups and red peppers. In order to solve this problem, R&D personnel developed bio-monitoring equipment as a supplement to AutoDietary. Once the device is activated, the necklace identifies the common food list that the user has ingested.

Biomonitoring equipment calculates calorie intake and provides healthy dietary advice to users based on their blood glucose levels and other conditions.
