Cambridge University conducts cancer research with virtual reality

VR technology is changing with each passing day, and VR devices like PSVR, Gear VR and Google Carton Glasses are increasingly being adopted by mainstream users. From the beginning, the industry turned its attention to the huge potential of VR. In addition to its current application in the pan-entertainment industry, it enables us to experience virtual environments that cannot be experienced in real life.

Recently, the People’s Daily reported that Cambridge University’s research on VR medical has made new progress.

According to the British "Cambridge News" report, two cancer research projects at the University of Cambridge recently received a £40 million grant from the British Cancer Institute. Among them, Professor Greg Hannon will lead a VR project. This project aims to establish a 3D model of breast tumors through VR technology. Hannon said they needed to cut the breast cancer samples into very thin sections, then image the sections and analyze the genetic makeup of each cell. All of these slices are recombined into a 3D model that researchers can sneak into and observe through VR devices. It is reported that this may open up a new way to study and treat breast cancer.

Coincidentally, in 2016, the Weir Cornell Medical Center in New York City developed a VR helmet. Wearing this helmet, the researchers can see and interact with the 3D model of the microscopic protein, making it easier to observe the patient's DNA lesions and how the lesions occur to find the lesion.

In addition to being used for cancer treatment, VR technology can also be used to train first-time doctors. A Swedish company used VR technology to produce “simulated patients” for doctor training. Doctors can use them to practice CPR compressions, or they can pre-program the process to analyze complex conditions. The “patient” of VR technology simulation can not only allow doctors to learn in a more realistic virtual environment, but also improve the drawbacks of traditional surgery on animal damage.
