New drug is expected to kill superbug

In the history of human medicine, the emergence of antibiotics saved many lives. However, the abuse of antibiotics has caused the problem of resistance to bacteria to intensify. At present, some superbugs face the dilemma of “no medicine to cure”. The World Health Organization predicts that by 2050, super bacteria will overtake cancer as the world’s number one killer.

Recently, the British "Nature" magazine published a microbiology paper, saying that scientists have discovered a new type of antibiotic that can kill methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus - MRSA in mouse experiments.

As early as 1961, British scientists classified MRSA as "superbug." This type of MRSA bacteria has been found throughout the world from infection to infection. The bacterial strains are resistant to all traditional antibiotics and have formed a subgroup of antibiotic-resistant, retained-bacteria cells that are not metabolically active and are very difficult to treat. The researchers at Brown University in the United States, Eleftherios Malonencis and colleagues, identified two synthetic retinoic acid compounds that not only killed the growing MRSA cells and retained bacteria, but also through computer simulations. Successfully eradicated the MRSA bacteria in mice.

The researchers pointed out that the two compounds are less toxic vitamin A analogs, bacteria are unlikely to produce resistance, and no adverse reactions in experimental mice. After further confirmation of safety, they will be combined with common gentamicin into clinical trials. Once successful, this research will achieve a revolutionary breakthrough in the development of antibiotics against superbugs. â–²(Rachel)
