Finger sensors and applications will make monitoring Parkinson's disease easier

Release date: 2014-04-23

The US medical technology startup Great Lakes Neurotechnologies (hereinafter referred to as "GLN") recently received $1.5 million in financial assistance from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). GLN will use the funds to develop Parkinson's disease's mobile monitoring technology to make tracking and monitoring of the condition more flexible and flexible.

GLN previously developed a technology platform called "Kinesia" and received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The platform monitors Parkinson's disease through a patient-worn sensor and tablet-based software. The tablet is responsible for issuing instructions to the patient, collecting data from the sensors, and transmitting the data to the cloud service. Through a portal, doctors can access information about the progress of the patient's recovery.

GLN said that although many companies in the current clinical trial market are developing new treatments for Parkinson's disease, these treatments are often expensive, making them inaccessible to routine care activities for Parkinson's patients.

The Kinesia system developed by GLN, in addition to being used to monitor disease progression and evaluate the efficacy of participating in clinical trials of Parkinson's patients, can also help neurologists adjust settings for implanted brain pacemakers (DBS). The system's sensors capture linear acceleration and angular velocity, which are then processed and converted to component values by GLN software, allowing doctors to determine the severity of tremors over a fixed period of time.

GLN said the app will be promoted in the US and Europe by the end of 2014.
