[Alternative treatments for mild infections can help fight antibiotic resistance] Antibiotic resistance poses a serious and sometimes fatal challenge to the treatment of severe bacterial infections. In a new paper published in the December 28 issue of the journal Open Access Journal PLOS Biology, Kristofer Wollein Waldetoft and Sam P. Brown of the Georgia Institute of Technology proposed that the development of alternative therapies for mild infections would help Slow down the development and spread of antibiotic resistance.

When bacterial pathogens change, antibiotic resistance occurs, which reduces the effectiveness of the drug and becomes a serious problem when these resistant strains multiply. In the United States alone, more than 20,000 people die each year from antibiotic-resistant infections. Most studies to identify alternative antibiotics, such as bactericidal viruses, focus on the use of alternative therapies for serious infections. However, such efforts have had limited success.

To determine possible ways to be more effective, Waldetoft and Brown reviewed previous studies on the use of antibiotics. They used an evolutionary framework to analyze the data from these studies and determined that the widespread use of antibiotics in certain mild infections may make a significant contribution to the development of antibiotic resistance. This is partly because antibiotics can select the resistance of any bacteria present in the patient, not just the target defect. Since many antibiotics work in a similar manner, a single antibiotic can promote resistance to many drugs. Therefore, they believe that research efforts to develop alternative therapies should shift the focus from severe infections to mild infections.

Analysis suggests that alternative therapies for some minor infections (which may be easier to develop) may indirectly slow the development of antibiotic resistance to more dangerous germs. This may help maintain the ability of antibiotics to fight serious infections that are difficult to develop with new drugs.

The authors point out that the development of non-antibiotic replacement therapy for mild infection is only one strategy for combating antibiotic resistance. Other strategies include short-term treatment with antibiotics and the use of antibiotics for a narrow range of species.
